Make the Time Matter
Do I let the people that I love dearly really know how much they mean to me? That I would lay down my life in order to keep my daughter out of harm's way? How I want her to realize the opportunities that are available to her in this life. Have I thanked my parents enough for everything that they have given me, for the morals and independence that they instilled in me? Does the UIC know what his faith in my decision to go to school means to me? And when he says when you're finished with school and our life is where we want it to be, does he realize how much I value the fact that he calls it our life...not our lives? Do my friends realize how much I appreciate their being there for me when I need to be lifted up? When I need a shoulder to lean on?
On the above link about Randy Pausch, you can watch his speech and also read an excerpt from the Parade magazine article that he wrote this past April. He talks about the importance of childhood dreams and dreaming big. He talks about always having fun. Making sure that you ask for what you want and that you're not afraid to take risks. He also talks about making time for the things that matter. What matters to you?
When I sat down to write this post tonight, I started out thinking I'd write about working in the yard after karate class and how I had wanted to catch lightening bugs with my own Doodlebug until she got several phone calls. I stayed outside though and continued working. And my mind worked through how important right now is in my life. I'm young (enough!), my daughter is young, my parents are still here with me, I have friends who love me. I am living out my dreams of becoming a teacher. My husband looks at me the same way that he did 20 years ago when we met. I'm healthy. I want to make my life matter. I want to focus on what is most important to me.
I want to stop putting off what needs to be done or said today. I want to live in the now, not the now or later. I want each day to be filled with wonder. I want to realize that even when times are bad, there's a reason why I'm going through it. I told someone today I know if God led me to it, He's going to lead me through it. Maybe there's a lesson that I'm to learn there so that I can help someone else out down the road?
Before I have an opportunity to go back and decide this is too much, I'm going to end here. Sorry it's so long.... but if I may as you a question...what matters most to you....and what are you doing to make the time matter?
Just because I want to know...
After further investigation (which means I called downstairs to The UIC) "Hey, you --- what happened?" I discovered the root of the angst. The drama that was consuming the little mamma. So I coaxed her out of the bathroom and down the hall to have a little girl talk... and in the middle of my impromptu speech about hormones and how they just make us sometimes laugh or cry ... or scream...about anything she peeks over at the keyboard... and says...
"Momster, why do you blog?"I told her that was a good question. I explained how I had been reading blogs for a while before I ever considered having one of my own. I told her that basically I blog to record our family history. It's a record of the things that are going on in our lives and in the world around us. I don't try to be funny or entertaining, I strive to be honest. It's like an extension of the "Dear Diary" that I kept as a child. It's a place for me to record my lists. My thoughts. My fears. That I wished I had more time to share things that I enjoy working on, but with school sometimes that's impossible. I told her it's just a place that is an extension of me.
So I pose the question to you, and I hope you'll leave me a comment with your answer... Why do you blog? I look forward to sharing your replies with her later on today.

Attention Michaels Shoppers!
1. If you are on Michaels mailing list, they have sent out some lovely coupons. I got 50% one item each day of the week until July 5th. The lady in front of me got 40% so I don't know how they determine who gets what, but what a deal!
2. Today from 4 pm till 8 pm, if you go in their stores, there is a coupon that will get you an additional 25% your total purchase. This includes sale items. I'm going back. I want to get another collage frame for the landing and they are 40% off right now...so we are talking about a $30 frame for around $13.50. Not bad in my book!
3. If you are unhappy with the present situation that Michaels has taken ALL of the craft classes(scrapbooking, sewing, knitting, drawing, painting, etc) out of their stores with the exception of Wilton (because they have a six year contract), contact them via phone at 1-800-642-4235 or write them :

One Big Headache...

I've always had a sofa, love seat, chair and ottoman as my main pieces of furniture. But my family is rough on furniture so I am seriously leaning towards not buying a love seat and purchasing two recliners. My current furniture is a dark green with some stripes - sort of like a plaid. The sofa that I am looking at is a light neutral color. The recliners we are considering would be burgundy and would tie in the drapes that I have on the three windows in the room. My dilemma though is what to do with this awkward corner over between the fireplace and the window? Should I purchase one of the chairs that matches the sofa to go here?
Right now I have the matching chair to my current furniture there. Anybody have any other ideas of what to do with that space? It's also where I generally put our Christmas tree so whatever is there has to be moved out and/or around when it's time to decorate. (Gee, I keep bringing up that, don't I?)
BTW, the two openings you see on the wall where the sofa is (that doesn't have a door) are two different ways to enter the room so they can't be blocked because of the flow of traffic.
Seriously, somebody give me some suggestions...

It's The Weekend!
So, what are my plans? Well... in all of my deep cleaning here at home, I've been taking things that were out of place to one of two rooms...the bonus room and the guest room. So I plan on tackling those tomorrow to try to return them to some sort of order.
Next I plan on priming the walls in the laundry room and the upstairs hallway. We've been putting off painting the hallway since we moved in and personally I'm tired of waiting. Why not do it today so you can enjoy it tomorrow? That may become my new mantra!
If I'm not completely pooped from these projects, I want to move all of the pictures downstairs to the dining room and start sorting them out so that I can try to get semi-caught up with my scrapbooking. Oh, and I also want to finish up The Doodlebug's memory board for her room.
I think that I found the furniture that I want in the living room today. Very simple - a traditional couch and two recliners. I've never picked anything like this before so I've really got to think about it. The couch is a neutral color and the recliners come in a bordeaux that I think will go with my curtains and color scheme. I took The UIC today to see them, for his opinion. He fell in love with the recliner and said whatever I thought was best, he would agree if he gets that chair. And all this time - I've thought a way to their heart was through their stomach! Huh. I've just got to decide if it wll fit in the room the way I want it to and if it will work together.
Anybody else taking on any projects for the weekend?
What's On Task For Friday
I'm going off with my most favorite persons in the entire world today. We are going to Cracker Barrel for breakfast and then I think we might go to Bath & Body Works and Hobby Lobby. And that will make 3 days in a row at the Hobby Lobby for me. And I promise I'm not buying those Christmas decorations that are already out - even though I did walk down the aisle yesterday and see some cute stuff to get for The Doodlebug's personal tree. But I'll wait till it gets cooler - or there's a sale.
so that we can give it a remodel. I'm really surprised that at the fabric that she picked out. It's black with hot pink dots. I thought we'd go chocolate brown and pink - her accessories in her room are all hot pink - her walls are a pale pink color. Or she'd try to convince me that something with a pirate theme would work - cuz you know, nothing goes with pink like skulls and crossbones. But I love her room. Her bed is like sleeping on a cloud. I love her furniture, too. Even though that sleigh bed is one of the culprits that has caused me to break a toe or two...Thursday, June 26, 2008
Thursday at the Movies

I have to say, we all enjoyed this movie a great deal. I wasn't sure what to expect, because I remembered the tv series but it was an entertaining movie. If you haven't seen it, it's worth the cost of admissions - there are some really good laughs.
After the movie, the UIC needed to exchange something at the store and then we went and ran some errands. The Doodlebug and I picked out some new fabric to recover her memory board and then we had pizza at one of our favorite restaurants. I'll be honest, I'm still a little shocked at how much everything continues to go up because of the outrageous gas prices. We go here frequently and it seems like the prices just continue to go up and up and up.
Speaking of gas prices, did you read the story about
the two girls who are protesting the gas prices because their parents turned off the cable? I know when we filled up our two vehicles on Monday, it was around $130. Did you know that gas stations are set to stop the pump at $49 if you use your debit card at the pump and $100 if you use your Visa? I'm just grateful we don't still have our Jeep, which only got about 8 miles a gallon. Could you imagine?
The UIC is taking a few days off because he's been having a lot of back pain... I think it's because he does so much during ball season. I'm hoping that during this time we go out and pick out our new living room furniture and do a few small things around the house. I think tomorrow The Doodlebug and I are supposed to go off with my Mom. I am waiting for her to call me back and let me know how Daddy's stress test went this morning.
I just wish it would cool off - so that poses the question - what do you do when it's just too hot to be outside?
Have a thrilling Thursday!
Easy Summer Cooking
Crock Pot Pizza
1.5 lbs browned ground beef
2/3 box rigatoni noodles, cooked
16 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese
1 can cream of chicken soup (or mushroom if you prefer)
1 sliced onion, optional
2 jars pizza sauce
1 package sliced pepperoni
Alternate layers in your crock pot as follows: beef, noodles, cheese, soup, onions, sauce, pepperoni; Repeat ( I usually just layer it all once..) Heat on low for 4 hours.
I've made it with and without the onions - it just depends on whether or not you like onions. But the cheese and the soup somehow fill the noodles with their gooey goodness and make this taste oh so good!
And the best part? I can sit this out on our screened in porch and my kitchen stays nice and cool. Gotta luv that!

Works For Me - How to "Save" art projects
The Doodlebug is always bringing home tons of art projects from school. I finally figured out how to preserve her work while saving space in our home... I take a picture of her
with the artwork, and then I take a picture of the artwork itself. Here is an example - and it keeps us both happy - she has the memories and I have less to contend with around the house.Random Things From The Momster
- Laundry - towels - already done yeah me!
- Vacuum - upstairs - Sleeping Beauty (aka The Doodlebug) is still asleep....
- Mop - Kitchen - on my way once I finish this...
- Cleaning/Dusting - Master Bedroom and Bath
I think for dinner, it's gonna be Tacos tonight. I have the neighborhood Bible Study, too. The Doodlebug is spending the night with her grandparents. So that's my day in a nutshell.

Oh, and do you realize that Christmas is just six months from tomorrow??? Be on the alert - Hobby Lobby is already putting out their decorations. :)

1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
1 can (16 oz) refried beans
1 carton (8 oz) guacamole
1 onion, chopped
1 tomato, seeded and diced
shredded lettuce
about 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
1 can (6 oz) black olives, pitted and halved

Scramble ground beef in skillet over high heat until browned. Drain excess fat. Sprinkle with Taco seasoning and pour on tomato sauce. Simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Warm the beans and spread in center of large platter. Cover with beef mixture. Scoop guacamole into the center and in concentric circles around it, sprinkle the onion, cheese, tomato and lettuce. Dot with black olives. Surround with corn chips. And don't expect any leftovers!
(Don't) Try This At Home...
Corn Starch Running
What do you think? Would you be brave enough to volunteer to do this???
Monday Musings
- Strip The Doodlebug's bed and doing all of her laundry
- Vacuum the downstairs
- Mop the bathrooms
- Cleaning The Doodlebug's room - after all, after the closet believe me the room should be purged too!
- Grocery shopping - including menu planning
- It's Karate night so that means I have to have dinner ready earlier...
- Catch up on my Bible Study homework
I used to work from this weekly schedule of jobs around the house and it worked like a charm, until about 2 years ago and then everything went bust. I'm focusing this week on getting back on schedule - with my house and my health. I've also decided that we are going to take this 'mom getting healthier' project one step further and make it a 'family getting healthier' program. It will make it a lot easier on me if we are all sort of following some sort of program and it'll make them healthier to boot!
So here is my plan to get myself healthier and lose that 50 lbs by Christmas!
- Weigh each Friday - and I'll be posting any changes here to make me accountable!
- Take my measurements (bust, waist, hips) each Friday
- Make sure the house is full of healthy fruits and veggies for mini snacks
- Journal what I am eating.
- Menu planning for the week
- Getting in some form of exercise each day
So feel free to join me. After all, there's power in numbers!

This Week's Goals
It has been a really uneventful weekend here. The UIC is trying to rest his back after overdoing it with ball season and the tournaments he's been calling. The Doodlebug has been recuperating from staying up all night at her friend's house. And me, well aside from the exhilaration of cleaning out her closet, I have done nothing. When did we become such a boring bunch???
My friend D posted on her blog this morning about weight loss. It is something that I have been thinking a lot about lately. I really would like to lose 50 pounds in the next six months. I have reached that place where I just am not happy with the way I look. I know, I know---I've said it all before. I want to feel motivated. I want to see the numbers on the scale move down. I want to be able to buy a bathing suit and feel like my chest is not on display for the world to gawk at. With The Doodlebug starting middle school this fall, this is something that I really want to accomplish. I think that 50 is a reasonable goal to shoot for. I just know that I've got to make myself more accountable for what I eat and I have to make myself get in some really good cardio every day. For me that involves journaling about my food choices and getting up and moving around more than I do. Plus my sister seems to think my nephew will marry his girlfriend by next spring - I don't want to be the 'fat aunt' at the wedding. I want to buy something beautiful to wear. And it's just too darned hot to be overweight!
Do you have a success story of how you lost weight? Any suggestions on how to do it? What worked for you --- and what didn't work? Any good dieting blogs? I'm open to ideas...
This week is all about getting into a routine. A weight loss routine. Getting back into my cleaning routine. Starting to review math with The Doodlebug and getting her to read some more. We'll see how it all goes....

The Doodlebug's Closet

And here are the after - Note: we haven't finished sorting her stuff into the raspberry colored baskets but I think the tag system is going to work really well. Also, I have convinced the UIC to put a series of hooks in the closet for her to hang her bags and stuff on.
This is one mission that I am glad to have accomplished. She laughed at me though because I sorted her stuff by category and color - how many pink shirts does a girl need anyway???
Hope your having a sensational Saturday!

Out with the Old - In with the New
The Doodlebug is spending the night at her best friend's house. The house is so quiet when she is gone. I mean, being only one child she doesn't make a lot of noise, but I think it's a silence that I somehow feel in my heart knowing she's not just down the hall or up the stairs. I hope that she's having a great time. She'll be a little surprised when she gets home and sees what I've done in her room...
All this talk about the 'before and after' that Boo Mama is hosting started me thinking. My friend "D" talking about her daughter's bedroom started me thinking. So this evening, I pulled everything out of her closet. I took pictures so hopefully I'll post my own mini before and after tomorrow. Right now it seems so nice and tidy - getting rid of some stuff that I know doesn't fit and moving her toy chest from the bottom of her closet (I've used it to store her extra blankets, etc for years). I plan on finishing it up in the morning...
I need a little advice, if you would care to share. I have been having a really hard time falling asleep for the past few weeks. It all started when I was sick and had that horrible cough. Do you have any good suggestions that work for you to help you get a good night's sleep? I have found myself up and wide awake at 3:30 this past week (as in, never went to sleep awake). I'm still waking up around 8 so I know my body isn't getting what it needs...I feel lackluster.
So that's it for today... I hope you've had a great Friday. The first official day of summer.
Sausage Muffin Balls
Sausage Muffin Balls - makes about 50 1-inch balls
1/2 lb bulk sausage (hot or mild) cut in chunks
1 box (8.5 oz) Jiffy corn muffin mix
4 oz. Cheddar cheese, shredded
1 Tbsp. grated onion
3 Tbsp. grated apple (tart variety)
Mix all ingredients together either by hand or in a food processor. Spray a cookie sheet with Pam and preheat oven to 350 degrees. Shape mixture (yes, it will be goopy) into about 50 1" balls and bake approximately 20 minutes. Of course these can be made in advance to bake when your company arrives.
As a side note, I hate the goopy feeling of the mixture so I generally have to wear gloves. What I like about the recipe is the different flavor given by using the corn muffin mix. I've made them with our without the grated apple - they are good both ways. So the next time you want to make some sausage balls, consider giving this recipe a shot....it is sure to not disappoint.
Until the next time -

One of My Favorite Little Cookbooks

When I was dating the UIC, back when I wore the "Marry Me, Fly Free" tee-shirt, I would venture up the interstate on Saturdays to see him at the ballpark where he called ball. Nearby was a shopping mall and a bunch of little strip malls. One of these malls had a Michaels store and being the card-carrying member of the Michaels shopper club (I kid), I had to check it out. I stumbled across this cookbook on that day and the title is what lured me in. After all, I was newly engaged and in the mist of thinking of entertaining and preparing meals for family and friends. Atlanta's Favorite Appetizers by Lois Hutchman Debreceni.
Mrs. Debreceni shares some of her and her friends and families favorite recipes in the book. The book is written and illustrated by her and she had it printed at the Georgia School for the Deaf. The proceeds benefited CURE (Children Cancer and Leukemia). She tells a story of one summer where her parents allowed her and her sister to cook their dinners. On one particularly Hotlanta night, her sister decided to color all the food a 'cooling' color so she added blue food coloring - she says the blue mashed potatoes were 'astonishing'.
She shares quick appetizers that you can prepare from things you probably have laying around in the pantry and frig. She has recipes for cheese items to meat items to seafood and veggies. She even included a chapter on garnishes. This is a woman who took feeding her flock seriously!
Over the years, I've tried different things from the cookbook. Over the next couple of days, I'll share with you some of our favorite recipes from the book. This first one is something that The Doodlebug has requested we have this weekend. I hope if you try it, you enjoy it as much as we do!
Chicken Nuggets
1 lb boneless breast of chicken
1 egg
1 tsp. white wine Worcestershire
1/2 tsp. garlic salt
1/2 tsp. paprika
1 cup dry bread crumbs
3/4 stick (3 oz) butter
Cut chicken into about 50 bite-size pieces. In a pie pan, beat egg and Worcestershire with fork. Mix crumbs in a bowl with salt and paprika. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and melt butter in 9"x13" baking pan. Dip chicken nuggets (a handful at a time) into egg mixture and then into crumbs. Put in buttered pan and bake 45 minutes, turning once after half an hour. Serve hot with toothpicks, to dip into:
Honey Mustard
3/4 cup mayonnaise
3 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
3 Tbsp. honey
If you decide to try it, please let me know what you think.

BooMama's Hosting A Before & After...
The idea is to pick a project or a lot of projects around the house that you want to accomplish and get them done by July 25th. Well this is just the sort of thing that I need to do to get myself motivated. After all, being the list maker that I am, I have a LONG detailed list of things I'd like to get done around the house. And since I spend SO MUCH time in my laundry room, I decided to make that my pet project.
So heaven help us, here is the laundry room now - excuse the mess. It's my least favorite place (for the obvious reasons).
Until the next time....I'm keepin' it real!

Are You A Poser?
I'm telling you, I left there with many deep thoughts and reflections. I am that person, as I am sure I have told before, who takes notes on everything. I write down things while I'm on the phone, if I see something interesting in a magazine I'll either circle it or jot down the information on a post-it note. So you can possibly imagine that in my study guide, I have made a lot of different notes on things I have heard since the Bible Study began.
Something else she touched on tonight was hidden hypocrisy. In my notes I wrote this: is it a hypocrisy to pretend to be the person you want to be? Yes. God wants us to be who we are. The genuine article - the designer's one and only - not some knock-off sample.
So along these lines, I feel the need to have a little confession with you...and myself. I have been very angry today. Why? I could list a million reasons and probably do a pretty good job of trying to justify them. But the truth would be that obviously there is something that is bothering me. The root of me. The person who is the designer original - not the knock-off sample that everyone sees on the outside. I have acted indifferent to my husband and daughter today just because I am not happy right now. In other words, I have acted like a complete jerk with the people that I love today. And I am sorry for that. I try to be a good person and I try to be a good friend. I strive to be a good mother and wife. But there are things about myself that I need to reflect on and decide to change.
So I pose the question to you - are you a designer original or a knock off sample of the person that you are intended to be?
Until the next time -

The Dads in Our Lives
My Dad is a remarkable man. He is always there for me whenever I need him. Have a flat tire? Call Daddy and he comes rushing to the rescue. Water leak? Again, call Daddy. He's an avid musician and he loves to grow vegetables in his garden. My sister once said something to the effect that I had married someone just like Daddy and she's right. I love you Daddy and I am so grateful to be your daughter. I value the life lessons that you have taught me - and yes you were right about all those things that you said would eventually happen. Thank you for loving me...flaws and all. This picture is of Daddy last summer on vacation at the beach.Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there!
This morning we gave The UIC his gifts - and something special that I was up until the wee hours this morning creating for him. I decided to do this -last minute - because I never got around to making the baseball scrapbook. I made a movie of the pictures of him and The Doodlebug from over the years and set it to In My Arms by Mark Wills. We got up this morning and I told him something was wrong with the television in the living room....lol....and then I turned on the DVD. I'm so glad that I took the time to do this.
Later today I need to go and see my Dad and take him his present. He's always so hard to buy for - so this year The Doodlebug picked out his present. I hope he likes it.

The Momster & The Chocolate Cake
My Mamaw G. was a phenomenal cook. Her dishes were so wonderful, you would start to salivate just wondering what she was going to cook up the next time you'd go and visit. She had a huge garden so most of the foods we ate were grown with her TLC which made it that much better. And I don't recall her ever using a mix to make a cake. Not like her granddaughter...who makes microwave cakes ...but again, I'm off on a tangent.
One time, she had made this two-layer yellow cake with chocolate icing. I don't know what possessed me - but you know that feeling where you'll think "If I just get the icing off the plate, nobody will know?" and then it progresses to "They'll never know I've eaten all of the icing off the cake will they?" Well I confess, I had one of those occasions. I will never forget her calling me into the kitchen (seems like they had company too!) and her standing there in front of that naked cake as she asked me what had happened to the icing.
Do you think I initially confessed what I had done? Because I didn't. I played it 'wide eyed and full of wonderment'. I don't remember what she finally said to end the conversation, but I have the feeling I probably collapsed against her, sobbing about it. She was such a wonderful lady, she probably would've just made me up a batch of icing if I'd just asked. All I can remember is always feeling that unconditional love. She loved me enough to let me eat all the chocolate icing off of the cake and then laughed about it. I hope that I can channel a little bit of Mamaw G when things like that happen in my life.
Next time I make a cake, I might just have to mix up an extra batch of icing - and invite The Doodlebug in for an afternoon of Mamaw G memories.
Michaels
1) It was on my way
B) There was a sheriff's car riding my bumper (this made me nervous, hence the need to turn)
I went into Michaels and found the cute little scrapbooking tags packets I was looking for. I walked around the store...just to take in everything that was new. I walked over to the classroom to see if Barbara, our favorite instructor, was there - but she was not. So I asked the cashier, whom I've known from my 2+ years of taking The Doodlebug to Saturday morning crafts, if they had an activity calendar for the summer. She told me that now the only class Michaels offers is Cake Decorating.
Cake Decorating? What? I like a pretty and festive cake as much as anybody else, but what happened to the kid's week long painting with Katherine? Crocheting? Cupcakes with Jennifer? All the things that The Doodlebug looks forward to doing each and every summer. She then informed me that they no longer have 'craft' on Saturdays. It's some kit thing you buy for $5.00 and you do it with the children. Well that's great, just great. The thing we (that's The Doodlebug and I) enjoyed about our Saturdays at craft was that she gets to hang out in the classroom with Barbara and I get to wonder the perimeter of the store to my heart's content and explore all new things crafty.
I am very disappointed. I told The Doodlebug before I picked her up for her dental appointment. Her disappointed is equal to my own. We've decided that we may have to venture over to Hobby Lobby and see what classes they offer. Preferably on an evening when it's not near 98 degrees outside. Disappointment is a dish best served cold.

My Wednesday "To Do" List
2. Get the Doodlebug's room completely cleaned from top to bottom
3. Tackle the Doodlebug's bathroom as well
4. Find out about removing shower doors from her bathroom
5. Take her to the dentist for her filling (yes, we are very unhappy about this)
6. Find all of the school pictures taken this past year and sort them to make a special project for her.
7. Catch up on the laundry.
8. Go to bed at a descent hour :)
Hope you have a productive day as well!

The only way to survive the summer...
One way we try to stay cool is by having lots of 'cold' things to eat. Like push pops. Or popsicles. Maybe bringing out the snow cone machine. Putting our cokes in the freezer to get super icey. But my favorite thing has to be ice cream sandwich cake. I've had it several different ways now, but I think that the basic recipe is a great foundation to start with. We usually make it for the Doodlebug's birthday which is in August. She has friends whose parents now make it or a variation for their birthday parties as well. One thing is for sure though...nobody ever says 'no thanks' to a slice of this concoction.
Ice Cream Sandwich Cake
2 -12 count boxes of ice cream sandwiches
1 - large container of cool whip
chopped candies or sprinkles
chocolate sauce or anything else you like
You'll need a 9x13 pan to prepare. Unwrap the ice cream sandwiches and lay them in the bottom of the pan. After you've covered the entire pan, smooth some of the cool whip on top. Top the cool whip with half of the chopped candies. Start the process of laying out the ice cream sandwiches again (I like to go in the opposite direction of the bottom layer). Top this off with
the remaining cool whip and candy. Put it back in the freezer to harden up and viola! You have ice cream sandwich cake. Sometimes I end up using more than a large container of cool whip, it's all just based on your personal preferences.
If you try this out, please let me know what you think.
The Wonder of Rainbows
There was a time in my life when I had a job that made me miserable. I was spending too many hours at work and not enough hours with the people who matter most in my life. The Doodlebug would tell me how she missed me. The UIC hated coming home to an empty house and being home for hours before we would get home. I felt like things would never get better. I can remember getting in my car one particularly bad day and thinking 'how can I keep doing this?'... wasn't this what I wanted to avoid when I left the airline? I didn't want to be married to my job. I started driving to my parents' house to pick the Doodlebug up when I noticed something in the sky.
A rainbow. Now while you might see a rainbow and think about how pretty or how neat it is or even get scientific about the colors and the light, etc. all I could see was God's promise. Things would get better. That was what I thought that very instant. And the interesting thing? After that day, I saw a lot of little 'bursts' of rainbows in the sky. And it always had just a calming effect on me. I don't remember if we had a lot of rain that spring, but we certainly had a lot of rainbows.
I explained to the Doodlebug that sometimes when things are bothering us, the best thing we can do is pray about them. Take our troubles and burdens and worries and give them over to God. It's very similar to my experience of discovering Psalm 121:2...but that's a story for another day.
Just remember - when you are worried, sometimes God sends you rainbows.

How May I Help YOU?
Do you ever wonder what Lucy Van Pelt would say to people if she could really offer advice? Like if there was a 1-800-psy-help line number to call and straight from the hip Lucy answered the phone? Ah, there are days that I'd like to be Lucy. There are people who call me when something is wrong. You know the type, where you answer the phone and at first you think it's a heavy breather. Wow - I haven't gotten those calls since high school!Only to realize that someone is so emotionally upset that they can't find the words to speak, hence the heavy breathing. That's when I generally go from being The Momster to being the Therapist.
I wonder what Lucy would say to these people? Would she say something like "Oh for once, will you just get a grip? It's not all about you-you-you. The world doesn't revolve around you. I am sick of it - sick! Stop being this weepy eyed whoa is me pain in my backside! Now put on your big girl panties and build a bridge and get over it already will you?!!!"...or maybe that sounds more like Christine on Grey's Anatomy. Or better yet, my friend Stacey, the high school history teacher. Think I can call her up and ask to borrow a little moxie?
Until the next time.

Happy Birthday Cinnamon!
Cinnamon shortly after we adopted herI informed the Doodlebug today that Saturday is Cinnamon's 3rd birthday. What is more festive than a picture on my blog? Afterall...she likes to try to lay on the desktop while I try to type. When she was in the third grade, the only thing that the Doodlebug wanted for her birthday was a cat - not a dog, not a bike or a baby sister or brother (whew!) but she wanted a kitten. So after many discussions with the UIC, we decided to adopt a cat - and we let her choose. I knew the minute we saw Cinnamon that she was going to come home with us. Luckily the Doodlebug let me name her Cinnamon. Her foster mom had named her "Cupid".
So thank youfurball for keeping us all in line around here. Thank you for bringing so much joy to the Doodlebug's life and keeping us all entertained.

A mILeStOnE

I think my husband thinks it's funny that my blog is called "Slacker Mom" because I don't really consider myself to be a slacker. (Makes me think of the speech from the Principal to Marty McFly in Back to the Future.) The term slacker was just something that my friend "D" and I laughed about and when we both decided to start a blog, I said "I'll be the SLACKERMOM".
So anyway, thank you to those who read my ramblings. This has been a lot of fun!
As always - until the next time....
The Momster
PS) I will do the obligated 100 things later - :) I promise - oops! should a slacker ever promise to do anything?????

Random Things
1. I love to watch the movie The Women when I can catch it on TV, so I am really excited about the remake that will be released this year. But I'm not sure about Meg Ryan as Mary Haines - I still cannot believe she cheated on Dennis Quaid - even if it was with Russell Crowe.
2. I am very unhappy that Moonlight has been cancelled. As corny as the backstory was, it made for entertaining Friday night television.
3. I wear glasses. I have a pair of contacts somewhere in the bathroom in a drawer. I wish that I didn't wear glasses most days but my eyes get really dry lately.
4. I love to watch Gene Simmons Family Jewels on A&E. I find the show to be hilarious and that he is just one big geek.
5. I do not watch daytime TV. I can't get caught up in Judge Judy and As the World Turns. Maybe it's leftover from being a kid, but there is so much other stuff to do - why sit and watch TV?
6. But I do love Matt Lauer and will watch the Today Show if I am at home.
7. I like to sing Karaoke with the Doodlebug.
8. I sew about once a year - to make her Halloween costume. That's about it.
9. I have never wished that I was short. I am one of the few women that I knew growing up who enjoyed being tall. My mother always made me feel proud for being tall - even though I'm only 5'9".
10. In my family, my husband is the shorter man - he's 6'. Everyone else is taller.
11. Coughing my head off at 2 in the morning is not my idea of fun.
12. I'm secretly excited for the Doodlebug to start middle school this August. I had a great time in middle and high school so I'm looking forward to all that she'll get to experience.
13. I am guessing 12 things are enough 'sharing' for the middle of the night. I'll probably look at this tomorrow and go "wha????"
I hope you're having sweet dreams :)
